[Although truthfully, she isn't concerned that Haru won't notice. It's plain to see that Haru is very fond of Elie.]

I'm certain that Haru already knows what trouble he'll be in if he does something inappropriate without your father making any threats.

What colour would you like the icing on your cake to be?

Pink!

[ That's an immediate answer, without room for thought.

She really is a seven year old girl...

I think that's the absolute prettiest color, don't you?

[Konan is mildly amused, and not at all surprised by the request.]

It is a very pretty colour. I'm rather fond of blue and purple, personally.

[Those two colours dominate her wardrobe.]

They look really pretty on you, though - especially with your hair!! I think pink looks prettier on me than those.

Pink looks lovely on you, Ikki.

[It reminds her to add a pink hair accessory of some sort to Ikki's present, as a matter of fact. She'll just have to take a quick look at Ikki's wardrobe to try to find something that matches a few of Ikki's things.]

That sounds perfect.

[Konan likes meat well enough, and tends to prefer dishes with fish, especially if it's broiled. Everyone has their preferences, although some of her cravings have been odd lately.]

Perhaps we can split a fruit salad for dessert if they have it.

Fruit salad? You know me way too well.

[Fruit? Pretty awesome. She's also big on cupcakes, but she can always scoop those up some other time.]

[It's what happens when there's such a big age gap between sisters. The elder one functions almost like a young aunt rather than as an older sibling at times.]

It shouldn't be too busy right now.

[The teenaged students out of school for the day would flock to places with junk food, for the most part.]

[It doesn't sound right with Uzumaki, in her opinion. Although at least she doesn't hate it the way she hates the names Madara and Tobi.]

I think I'd rather stick to Yahiko for a boy's name.

...Yahiko sounds nice. Yeah, choose that one. [Whoops sure is naming your child for you.]

What if it's a girl, though?

[Unless of course, Nagato dislikes the name for some reason, but she doesn't think he'll mind it.]

...You know, Ikki's gonna be eight in a couple days. Isn't that weird?

It seems like only yesterday that she was just starting school.

[Children grew so fast. She still remembers when Elie started school.]

That reminds me...I know you and Tenten will be busy with setting up Ikki's party, so if you'd like, I can bake her cake.

[She even has the time to decorate it and make it pretty.]

A cake? That would be great! [It's true- they have an awful lot to prepare before the party. Plus, Konan bakes really well. Ikki will be so pleased.]

Thanks, Konan. Baking something for her would be great, plus it knocks one more thing off the list.

Then it would be my pleasure. Can you think of anything in particular that she might like on her cake?

[By default, Konan is going to make the cake with flowers, but if there's anything in particular Ikki wants, she's willing to put that on there, too. What's the point in being an artist if you can't make nice things for your family?]

Have you considered taking a self-defense class?

[She already knows he's unlikely to stop engaging in all of his pranks, so she might as well encourage him to learn to protect himself a little better. He's already small, mischievous and not popular amongst his peers.

Another minute passes, and the bullies are far enough away that they won't be able to tell that their target has been hiding here the whole time if they happened to turn around. Unless, of course, Loki decides to yell at the top of his lungs, but he's not a stupid boy. Just a trouble-magnet.]

But teacher, my brain is my self defence.

[There's a small smile on his face when he comes out.]

And my size makes me perfectly able to do a great amount of sneaking around, you see?

[How troublesome bullies might seem to be and how painful beatings could be, Loki knew he was smarter than them. And maybe also wiser.]

I have been able to kick Cato's shins a couple of times...before he stuffs me into a locker, that is. That is quite self-defensive of me, I think.

[She smiles just a little.]

I meant a more physical self-defense. Perhaps you could study the body's pressure points, so you are still making use of your brain.

[Getting an art degree meant studying the anatomy, and Konan is well aware of how to hurt someone badly if she had to for whatever reason. She's also taken a couple of university biology courses. There's a textbook with a few of her illustrations in it.]

[He shakes his head and shrugs afterwards.]

And I will be fine. I am quite sturdy, you see?

You are one of my most resilient students.

[One of her best? No, not really. Loki gets himself into a lot of trouble, and at least half of it is completely self-inflicted. But 'resilient' is a genuine compliment. Not everyone would persist with all of the mischief he gets up to after getting picked on the way that he does, nor would everyone be able to maintain such a cheerful outlook.]

Indeed. That means that I will be well whatever happens. And I am a quick runner, do not forget that!

[Well, Loki is quite good at faking happiness or cheerfulness. Most of the time he feels less than average.

But now he smiles broadly and puts his hands on his hips.]

It will be well, teacher.

You are also very creative, though you don't always apply that creativity constructively.

[She's bought the act enough to think that he's usually a cheerful boy, who can sometimes have his down moments like any other teenager, although she does recognize the impact bullying can have on a student, which is part of the reason she makes the effort to interfere and prevent it.]

Still, it's my job to worry over the well being of my students, maternity leave or not. So you'll simply have to accept my concern from time to time.
